October has already arrived — the grove is shaking off the last leaves from its bare branches; the autumn chill has breathed — the road is freezing. The stream is still gurgling as it flows past the mill, but the pond has already frozen over; my neighbour is hastening to the distant fields with his hunting party, and the winter crops are suffering from the frantic frivolity, and the barking of dogs stirs the sleeping groves.
