The oldest depiction of the legend of Pygmalion and the statue can be found in Philostephanos (3rd century BC) and the most detailed ancient description can be found in Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD) in the Metamorphoses. Without consciously thinking of women, Pygmalion of Cyprus creates an ivory statue that looks like a living woman. He treated the effigy more and more like a real person and eventually fell in love with his artificial figure. On the feast day of Venus, Pygmalion begs the goddess of love: Although he does not dare to say that his statue should become a human being, he asks that his future wife should be like the statue he has created. When he returns home and begins to caress the statue as usual, it slowly comes to life. This union produces a daughter named Paphos, after whom the city is later named.
