Within any relationship narrative, it’s normal for people to have different preferences, priorities, tastes, and needs.
Because of this, compromises are often necessary to navigate differing positions. One possible approach is to always seek a middle ground, but an alternative is to take turns: sometimes following the needs and requests of one partner, other times those of the other.
It’s also possible that one person is willing to compromise on almost everything, while at the same time there may be certain issues on which they are not willing to compromise at all because they consider them absolutely essential. This introduces another delicate balancing element within a relationship: priorities.
Good communication is crucial so that each partner understands what the other considers a priority. What feels vital to me may not feel equally important to someone else. What offends me may not offend the other person, and what brings me joy may leave them indifferent.
This applies just as much to small things, like food preferences, as it does to major matters, such as raising children.
There is no single universal formula that works for everyone. Every relationship is built on the individuals involved, and individuals are, by definition, all different. As a result, every relationship is different.
Open, honest communication and a great deal of patience are essential foundations for reconciling the diverse needs that can arise within any kind of relationship—whether monogamous or polyamorous, it makes little difference.
