Ponies have lived wild and free on Dartmoor, England for at least four millenia. Semi-wild ponies roam freely on the moor, grazing and playing a vital role in maintaining a variety of habitats and supporting wildlife. The moor itself featured in Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'... Sherlock Holmes investigates the recent death of the latest Lord Baskerville, and threats made to the next Baskerville heir, and of course the spectre of the hound. The moor itself is very challenging, there are lots of mires, dangerous water-logged marshy and boggy areas of deep peat that have formed in hollows or valleys. There are also cairns, piles of stones of prehistoric origin harking back to the people who once lived there.
