Inspector Farsighted sat on the veranda of the colonial hotel, melancholically staring at the bottom of his empty teacup. His relaxation was interrupted by a sudden visit: an open-top off-roader flew up to the veranda, kicking up clouds of red dust. Out jumped a distressed Mr. Pieter Van der Merwe, the owner of South Africa's largest ostrich farm.
"Inspector! Thank goodness you haven’t left yet!" the farmer shouted. "An incredibly daring abduction has taken place! Alfred, the champion ostrich, has vanished from my breeding pen! He is the fastest racing bird on the continent—they offered a fortune for him! The thief left a mocking sign on the gate: a feather drawn in charcoal."
Farsighted calmly put on his signature uniform cap.
"Calm down, my friend. An ostrich is a prominent bird, and in the savannah, every track counts. Lead me to the crime scene."
