Arani could hardly believe her eyes as she stood behind a tree, bow and arrow in hand, watching in breathless silence, the ghostly figures of horse and rider, as the phantom glided and weaved through the trees, the silver horse's hooves seeming to scarcely touch the ground. The Winter Wood had always been shrouded not only in everlasting cold and snow, but also by great tales, legends, disappearances and mysteries, for as long as the people of the tiny village of Naris could remember. Over the years some had tried to follow the Green Rider, but none ever returned. Arani's own uncle was among one of those unfortunate, though her father insisted his brother had gone looking for gold in the ancient mine deep in the forest and had gotten caved in, but Arani did not believe this. Now, she was seeing for herself the strange apparition and felt the almost irresistible urge to follow, but knew better. She was supposed to be hunting, and was presently reminded of this by the bow and arrow in her hand. Then, just as quickly as it had appeared, the ghostly horse and beautiful rider vanished among the trees, without ever having made a sound. Arani sighed, and turned away. Mysteries would have to wait for another time...
