When Yayoi’s father married, he changed his surname to that of her mother’s due to her wealthy family’s seed and plant nursery in Matsumoto, Nagano, Empire of Japan. The resulting emasculation is said to have led to her father’s chronic infidelity and at least partially contributed to Yayoi Kusama’s traumatic childhood and mental health issues that she both fought and embraced throughout her life.

She began to hallucinate between 7 and 10 yrs of age, with a link to the family’s nursery fields. At 10 she began to draw and paint, an effort to deal with the illusions. Her mother would rip each artwork – which is speculated to have fueled Kusama’s obsessive and “frantic” manner in creating art.

The video highlights tiny glimpses of this period. The flowers she drew are a nod to her slightly older self who sent floral paintings to Georgia O’Keeffe, who was pivotal to Kusama’s career. Her mother also sent the little girl to spy on her father to report the details of his extramarital affairs. The clip ends with the child in the fields as the plants come to life in her mind.

The visions were in an early phase that worsened and would become the visual vocabulary of her work and world: Infinity, obsessive repetition, polka dots, flowers, hallucination, accumulation, psychological darkness & ecstatic beauty.
