Mycelium, the underground network of tubular hyphae that branch out, connect, and weave together the main vegetative body of fungi that eventually rise as a fruiting body on the surface as mushrooms.* It is the foundation of life, the engine of the metamorphic process by which death becomes the beginning of renewal. In a woodland, hyphae secrete powerful enzymes to process dead organic matter into nutrients that feed soil bacteria and eventually earthworms. Springtails, soil mites, and nematodes feed on the hyphae themselves, which in turn feed predatory insects and spiders, which themselves become meals for birds and lizards and toads, and on-and-on up the food chain.
