The red crabs scuttle through the clay,
Where twisted roots bar out the day.
They flash like sparks against the mud,
As vibrant as a drop of blood.
With clicking claws and watchful eyes,
They brave the tide that soon will rise.
A thousand spots of moving red,
Upon the earth where travelers tread.
He pauses where the shadows bend,
To watch the crimson host defend,
And smiles to see them slide away,
As gentle steps disturb their play.
