Oil on canvas, a painting showing the inside of a deep cavern where two 19th century rugged adventurers have just broken through to discover an ancient wall of petroglyphs, rock engravings of ancient origin, often associated with prehistoric peoples, depicting hand carved symbols of corporate logos along one wall of the cavern; the wall is mostly in shadow, a narrow shaft of light coming from high above provides side light, and one man holds a lantern; the air is hazy from the dust of their descent and their rope and tackle hang from the opening, rubble from their recent excavation lies beneath the opening, some of the carvings retain vague bits of faded color
This dream culminated from my interest in archeology, years of reading science fiction, my very sketchy understanding of the multiverse theory, and the indelible memory of the first post apocalyptic novel I read as a teenager: "A Canticle for Leibowitz", by American writer Walter M. Miller Jr., 1959.
Miller's book won the 1961 Hugo Award, and became a 'social science fiction' classic which is still read and talked about today. The story spans 2,600 post nuclear war years, divided into three distinct epochs, and basically traces humanity’s cyclical self-destruction as we repeat the mistakes of the past.
