A quite typical Minecraft situation. In the darkness (of caves as well as in the night), various monsters are spawning. And most caves are filled with total darkness, just occasionally interrupted by the dim glow of some lichens, This is why a cave explorer will place a torch every couple of steps. Torches are the cheapest light source available.

One monster species are spiders, officially 1.4 m wide, 90 cm tall. I pictured it even a bit larger. They are completely black, with two brightly glowing red eyes, which at least make the spiders recognizable over large distances in dark caves.
