THE fairies have never a penny to spend,

They haven't a thing put by,

But theirs is the dower of bird and of flower
And theirs are the earth and the sky.

And though you should live in a palace of gold
Or sleep in a dried-up ditch,

You could never be poor as the fairies are,
And never as rich.

Since ever and ever the world began

They have danced like a ribbon of flame,

They have sung their song through the centuries long
And yet it is never the same.

And though you be foolish or though you be wise,
With hair of silver or gold,

You could never be young as the fairies are,

And never as old.

FAERIES AND MUSHROOMS
WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?
WELL, WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…

…Never a penny to spend…
THIS REMINDS ME THAT…

…though mushrooms
do not utilize money,
they do trade
with plants,
IN ORDER THAT
they may grow.

THEY can also recycle material
even that which is
not useful, and,
use that material
to grow elsewhere!

WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…
…Since ever and ever the world began…
THIS REMINDS ME THAT…
according to molecular evidence
fungi may have originated
from protozoan ancestors

BEFORE
the KINGDOMS
animalia and plantae
split.

Strong evidence
INDICATES
fungi
are closer related
to animalia
than plantae.

In other words,
fungi=mushrooms
are more closely
related to us
than plants.

WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…

…Tho’ yea be foolish or tho’ yea be wise
with hair of silver or gold,
you could never be as young as the faeries are
and never quite as old…

THIS REMINDS ME THAT…
mushrooms are a powerful
ancient life form.

We know of single-celled
organisms, like bacteria,
and multi-celled organisms
like plants and animals,
ourselves, as well…

Mushrooms
are unique
in that they are
a single interconnected
network.

They are described
as being a third mode
of life in a kingdom
of their own!

The ENTIRE WEB
of LIFE is connected
through fungi.
