In '67 Detroit, a city aflame,
Fires of anger, a community in pain.
A spark ignited, a tinderbox of rage,
Years of injustice, bursting from the cage.
Discrimination, poverty, and despair,
Inequity and oppression, too much to bear.
Tensions simmered, frustrations grew,
Until the city erupted, in a fiery hue.
Protests turned violent, streets turned to war,
As people demanded justice, and so much more.
Angry voices, tear gas and smoke,
A city in chaos, the pain bespoke.
Buildings burned, windows shattered,
Lives lost, hopes scattered.
A city divided, a nation in shock,
As the flames of injustice, engulfed the block.
But in the midst of chaos, heroes arose,
Communities united, despite the foes.
Neighbors helped neighbors, across the divide,
Braving the turmoil, with hope as their guide.
1967 Detroit, a dark chapter in history,
A reminder of deep-rooted social misery.
A call for change, a plea for peace,
To heal the wounds, and make the strife cease.
Today we remember, with somber reflection,
The lessons learned, a call for introspection.
To stand against injustice, with courage and might,
And strive for equality, in the brightest light.
