We have many rhododendrons. Many have reverted to the root stock that was popular in the 1950's. Unfortunately, that root stock was too vigorous, taking over from the cultivated grafting and becoming a problem.
This rhododendron (at least 65 years old) was being crowded out by more vigorous varieties planted on both sides, hence the long thin bare lower limbs.
We cut down it's competitors and year by year it is becoming healthier
