While this tree's trunk might seem to be exaggerated with the gnarled knots and dead limbs, it's not unusual to see these growths in nature. Mainly because a solitary tree such as this one is subject to lightening strikes and high winds, so branches break and are torn from the main trunk, leaving oddly shaped bark to fill the void. I like the realism the illustrator chose to reveal, and shows us that old age does indeed give us character, as well as resilience. (what doesn't kill us make us stronger)
