A cherry orchard by the house, Cicadas buzz above the cherry trees, Ploughmen walk with their ploughs, Girls sing as they walk, Whilst their mothers wait for supper. The family dines by the cottage, The evening star rises. The daughter serves the supper, And the mother wants to give advice, But the nightingale won’t let her. The mother laid her little children Down by the cottage; She herself fell asleep beside them. All fell silent, save for the girls And the nightingale, who would not be still.
