The stream comes toward the viewer from his right, turns around in the foreground in front of the viewer, and exits at the left of the scene and disappears into the background. A 9 year old boy sits in his bathing suit in the river in the foreground. He is transfixed and amazed as he listens to the sounds of the brook and watches frogs and newts on the river bank.
An energetic and expressive oil painting depicts a young boy playing in a forest stream, surrounded by trees and a multitude of frogs and salamanders. The boy, with fair skin and light brown hair, is shown from the waist up, shirtless, and wearing blue shorts. He is seated on rocks in the clear, shallow water, looking intently downwards and to the left at a frog with a slight open mouth and a surprised expression. His elbows are near his knees, and his hands are partially submerged in the sparkling water. The water is rendered with patches of light blue, white, and various shades of green, reflecting the sun and the surrounding foliage. Rocks and green moss are visible around him and in the stream. To the left of the boy, on a mossy bank, several green frogs are scattered amongst the rocks, some camouflaged by the green and brown of the environment. To the viewer's right and behind the boy, a wider section of the stream flows, its surface painted with short, active brushstrokes of white and light blue, indicating movement. The background is filled with a dense forest of tall, leafy trees, their trunks in shades of brown and gray, and their leaves in various greens, yellows.
