She walked the vine entangled trail
fair maiden of the wood
and wondered what life had in store
would it be bad or good
She trod the bracken laden path
where ancient feet did rove
and to the stony grotto
her secret place
that was hidden in the cove
And there she thought about her life
for her bride groom cometh soon
upon his steed of dappled grey
dressed in silver and maroon
next week she would be going
over yon mountain away
to marry the Duke of Argyle's oldest son
and to live there for many a day
but her father too, was a nobleman
Chief of the Campbell Clan
and they lived in a tall grey stone castle
in the high cliffs of ancestral land
and she was his first born daughter
and came with a dowry high
which assured that she would live
rich and blessed indeed
until the day she died
Now for weeks her maids had been sewing
her trousseau so rich and grand
for she must be dressed in jewels and finery
when her father gave her hand
And the cooks down in the kitchen's
were making rich pastries, meats and such
and her sisters were decorating the great hall
with ferns and flowers and garland vines
to give it an elegant touch
and fine wine had been brought from the basement
for a toast when thy were wed
and another round for when
the sheets were thrown
as they consummated the marriage bed
and when she wore her jeweled and ivory dress
they would braid roses into her long and golden hair
so that she would look so elegant
as she descended the winding stair
And the treasures that she would be taking
much gold and silver and crockery and glass
and chests of cloth and lace and goods
that befitted her noble class
And on the birth of her first born child
and if she gave her husband a male
he would give to her a golden brooch
with the filigree so pale
And now she walked the hidden path
and thought of her bride groom fair
so tall and with arms as strong as iron bars
and with coal black eyes and hair
Now she sat and pondered
about her life, would it be bad or good
and she hoped now with all her heart
that she would be happy an fine
this fair maiden of the wood
