I read this aphorism in a book recently. It can be understood with Jungian psychology, Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and the philosophy of yin and yang from Daoism. But I was reading a murder mystery at the time, and it had malicious gossip as one of its themes. So that's where I went with it.
I believe that fear and insecurities create the fertile ground of credulity in which jealousy and avarice thrive, and whether gossip is in person or social media, it contributes to exclusionary and punitive behavior. It seems to me that the 'the mob mentality' has always had its foundation in this aspect of human nature.
