Prompt

A pale face emerges through vertical ripples of glass-like distortion, multiplied into shifting fragments. Blue shadows surround the figure while the eyes repeat across the surface, as if memory itself were refracted in water, forming a ghostly portrait suspended between clarity and illusion.

More about The Tenant of the Age of Aquarius

She moved into the aquarium because she believed the calendars had finally turned to water.

For years the astrologers had promised it: the Age of Aquarius, the epoch when everything would become fluid—ideas, identities, cities, even time itself. But when the new age arrived, it looked disappointingly similar to the old one. Traffic lights still changed color, people still argued about rent, and the sky continued behaving like an ordinary sky.

So she decided to help the prophecy along.

The aquarium was located in the center of the city, a cathedral of glass tanks and filtered blue light. When the caretakers left for the night, she slipped inside and stood between the tall cylinders where the fish hovered like punctuation marks in a sentence written by the ocean.

She chose an empty tank.

It wasn’t really filled with water; the glass was dry. But the light, bending through the walls of curved glass, behaved as if it were underwater. It turned every movement into a slow ripple, every breath into a tide.

When she stepped inside, her face fractured into vertical waves.

She looked at herself and realized the fish had always understood something humans had forgotten: the world is already an aquarium. We simply pretend the glass is not there.

Visitors began to arrive the next morning. Children pressed their hands to the tank and stared at the strange new specimen—Homo aquarius. She didn’t move much. She only watched them through the watery distortions, her blue eyes drifting like two quiet planets.

Sometimes she wondered whether the fish were looking back at her from their neighboring tanks and thinking the same thought:

Ah, they might say in the silent grammar of gills,
another creature who finally realized she was already underwater.

The guides eventually added a small brass plaque beside the tank. It read:

SPECIES: Human
HABITAT: Transitional
ERA: The Age of Aquarius

And the visitors nodded, satisfied.

Because in that blue chamber, where light folded itself into waves across her face, it finally looked as though the prophecy had come true.
