More about Cymocles and Atis

An oil painting of a mythological scene filled with various mythological creatures and women in classical Roman clothing, some of the women have angelic wings. In the center, a white horse rears up, and in the foreground, women are lying on the ground, some with dogs standing nearby. The background features a river landscape with autumn-colored trees under a partly cloudy sky. The lighting is warm and dramatic, highlighting the textures of the fabrics, feathers, and fur.

Note: This is directly derived from a drawing by a Scottish artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton titled Cymocles Discovered by Atis in the Bowre of Blisse. This is not a scene of history or mythology but an episode from Spencer's Fairy Queen, and one I have quite forgotten. My mother was somewhat scandalized that I enjoyed reading that old and very long poem from the sixteenth century because she had required to read it as an undergraduate at Illinois back in the 40's and hated it. The language is somewhat challenging but get a copy because you might agree with me, rather than my mother. https://archive.org/details/faeriequeene02spen_0/mode/2up
