More about Where I used to work in the 1980's :)

In the 1980's, when personal computers were in their infancy, I was wandering round selling Apple printer cards when I came across a design company about half a mile from Morden tube station, whose programmer had just left to join another firm. They wanted a Kitchen Design Program (KDS 5000) written for the Apple ][ series. It would do 3D perspective plots, and item selection from various kitchen manufacturers' catalogs, and print out a costing invoice at the end. Due to the slowness (1MHz) of computers at the time, I wrote it in Assembler, and also ended up totally re-writing the DOS, to add indexed-sequential file-handling, and to speed it up. It was both fun and frustrating at times, for example a source re-assembly took over half an hour (from floppy, as hard disks were very expensive (£3000) at the time). We exhibited the system at Interbuild (a Birmingham exhibition) in the early 1980's, and sold about 50 installations. Later I was to move on to other projects, such as the Multi-User Online Text Adventure Game "Wanderland" :)
