The gateway appeared on a Tuesday that had already happened twice.
At least that was what Nicholas Vance believed as he drifted through its pale arches. The structure stretched across interstellar darkness like the fossilized skeleton of some impossible organism. Every curve repeated itself. Every corridor contained a smaller version of the corridor ahead. Galaxies hung inside translucent chambers like forgotten memories stored in glass.
His wrist scanner insisted he was moving forward. His eyes insisted he was standing still.
Then he saw himself.
Not a reflection. Another Nicholas. Older. Thin. Waiting beneath the next arch.
“You crossed years ago,” the older man said. “This is only the copy remembering the crossing.”
The gateway trembled. A thousand more gateways unfolded inside its walls. Within each one, another observer stared back, carrying slightly different histories, slightly different regrets.
Nicholas realized the structure was not built in space.
It was built in perception.
The arches were recursive decisions. The galaxies were compressed memories. Reality itself was being reconstructed from fragments, each version believing it was original.
Far ahead, a final opening shimmered.
Beyond it waited the thing generating all the copies.
Or perhaps the first copy dreaming the rest.
Either way, the gateway continued forever, manufacturing universes from uncertainty, one observer at a time.
