The water had turned an ominous shade of black and was carrying with it a putrid smell, as though something had died and was now being dragged towards us. I tried to run, but my feet refused to move as the wave came crashing down on me, engulfing me in darkness and crushing me with a force that made me feel as though my very bones were being ground to dust.
