More about Minotaur: My Better Self

The Minotaur stood where the wall had split open, painted in colors too bright for a world that had already gone bad. Somebody had drawn him there years ago, maybe yesterday. Time got slippery in places like this.

The man walked toward the opening because there wasn’t much else left to do.

People talked about labyrinths as if they were made of stone. They were wrong. A labyrinth was made of decisions. One bad turn, then another, then a hundred more. By the time you noticed, you were living inside it.

The bull watched.

Not a monster. A witness.

The path ahead glowed with tangled lines and little points of light, constellations trapped in broken concrete. The old game. Connect the dots. Everybody thought the picture appeared at the end. It didn’t. The picture was already there. Connecting the dots was just a way of teaching yourself to see it.

He looked back over his life.

A woman leaving.

A friend lying.

A bottle.

A book opened by accident.

A dream of stairs turning like a fan in a black void.

A dead-end job.

A night road.

A strange kindness.

A betrayal.

A star.

A stone.

The dots were scattered everywhere.

The labyrinth wasn’t hiding the answer. It was manufacturing it.

Above him a spiral of light turned slowly in the sky, like some giant hand stirring the darkness. The geometric web on the ruined wall stretched outward, linking one glowing node to another. Every point depended on every other point. Every choice dragged a thousand unseen threads behind it.

The Minotaur seemed almost amused.

The old stories got it backward. The hero wasn’t trapped with the monster. The monster was trapped with the hero, forced to watch him stumble through the maze again and again, mistaking fragments for the whole.

The man stopped.

For the first time he understood.

There was no center.

No final room.

No hidden king waiting with explanations.

Only connections.

The woman connected to the book. The book connected to the dream. The dream connected to the road. The road connected to this broken gate and this painted bull staring out from the wall.

The dots became lines.

The lines became a pattern.

The pattern became a face.

His own.

The Minotaur lowered its head as if acknowledging an old debt finally paid.

Then the man stepped forward into the blue light, carrying the labyrinth with him, because that was the last trick of the maze:

You never escaped it.

You simply learned that it had been growing inside you all along.
