Socrates' death.Socrates was tried according to the standard procedure of the time. According to ancient tradition, Socrates declared at the trial that he did not consider himself guilty and that he deserved not punishment for his actions, but the highest honor for an Athenian - a free lunch at the Prytan. After that, the philosopher was sentenced to death. According to Plato, Socrates spent the last day of his life surrounded by his students. He consoled them with talks about immortality and the posthumous fate of the soul. Socrates took poison and asked a friend to make a sacrifice to the god of health, Asklepios. He regarded his death as a cure: he believed that his soul would finally leave this eternal world and go to the beautiful world of ideas in Jacques Louis David's painting The Death of Socrates.
Classical painting depicting a somber scene with philosophers in robes around a central figure; detailed, dramatic, with Greek inscriptions.
