"Receiving Jesus" or the "reception of Jesus" in Christian theology means actively believing in His identity, trusting His sacrificial work for salvation, and accepting Him as both Savior and Lord.
Core Biblical Meaning
• Belief and Identity: Based on verses like John 1:12 ("to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God"), receiving Jesus is synonymous with genuine faith and results in a transformed spiritual identity.
• Savior and Lord: It means relying on Jesus to forgive sins while surrendering personal control to follow His teachings and absolute authority.
• Active Transformation: Rather than just a passive action or a formulaic prayer, biblical reception requires an ongoing, responsive openness to God's truth and the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.
Historical and Academic Context
• Reception History (Wirkungsgeschichte): In biblical scholarship, the "reception of Jesus" refers to how different cultures, communities, and eras over the centuries have interpreted, portrayed, and reacted to the life and teachings of Jesus.
• Earthly Receptions: It also describes how people physically received Jesus during His earthly ministry—such as the rejection He faced in His hometown of Nazareth versus the faith shown by His disciples.
