On 5th November 1605 a plot to blow up King James I and the entire English Parliament with gunpowder was discovered. King James gave thanks for his delivery by decreeing that November 5th should henceforth be kept as a holiday. It is not a public holiday today, but it is still the custom to celebrate the day with bonfires and fireworks.
