Very grand medieval court interior with stained glass windows. Two or three beams of colored light shine through the windows. Majestic bearded king standing in front of throne with cape and gold crown. Throne is behind king. Lords and ladies on either side of court interior. Richly embroidered tapestries hanging from walls and ceiling. A beautiful smiling ancient Chinese style lady dressed in flowing ancient Chinese style robes embroidered with rich golden patterns stands in front of and greets the king, sleeves joined together and head slightly bowing and eyes closed. King, lords and ladies all look astonished.
In the early 16th Century the Italian poet Ariosto (1474 - 1533) composed a long fantasy epic in which Charlemagne was visited by a Chinese princess by the name of Angelica. She was a woman of such incredible beauty that virtually all of Charlemagne's men fell for her; Orlando in particular, a nephew of Charlemagne, fell so deeply in love with her that when later he learned that she had left with another man, he was so heartbroken he went mad. Hence the title of the epic, ORLANDO FURIOSO.
One wonders for what real historical reason anyone from China would have wanted to come all the way to Europe during Charlemagne's time (the journey wouldn't be easy either). I can imagine one possible reason: to propagate Buddhism. But then how would Christendom receive the alien and seemingly blasphemous teachings of the Buddha?... :)
