This should not be overlooked or controversial, but with the recent attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the US, it's at the front lines of the battle.

Women who have made major contributions to science and technology include: Madame Curie (Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry), Rosalind Franklin (crystallographer who discovered DNA structure), Barbara McClintock (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for work in plant genetics) , Grace Hopper (Computer Scientist, inventor of COBOL), Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson (NASA computer programmers).
Personal note: my mother earned as BS in chemistry at the height of WWII, and worked as a lab technician for years, returning to it much later in life. I also remember my college friends in the 1980s who pursued engineering degrees and were active in Society of Women Engineers. I have a niece who is an accomplished researcher in her own right.
