The Virgin Mary Connection
In some Christian and Eastern Orthodox legends, the lilac tree is said to have offered its cooling shade to the Virgin Mary and Joseph as they fled to Egypt to protect the baby Jesus from King Herod. As a reward, Mary blessed the tree with its lasting fragrance and beautiful blooms.
