"Artists must be people of wit, consciously or unconsciously philosophers; read, study and think a great deal of life." Intricately detailed Mixed media on cracked aged canvas. Surreal, whimsical landscape along a body of water.
The quote "Artists must be people of wit, consciously or unconsciously philosophers; read, study and think a great deal of life" comes from the American painter and art educator Robert Henri, from his book *The Art Spirit*.
Henri held the view that good art goes far beyond mere technique and must draw upon deep reflection, observation, and life experience.
An oil painting of a surreal landscape where a cluster of colorful, old houses sits on a small island in a calm body of water under an overcast, textured sky. A large, amber-yellow sphere, possibly a moon or sun, hangs prominently in the sky above the houses. There are several deciduous trees with bare branches interspersed among the houses and along the water's edge. The houses, in shades of white, light blue, and reddish-orange, have dark roofs and several windows. Their reflections are perfectly mirrored in the glassy surface of the water, with subtle ripples and lines suggesting movement or texture on the water. In the background, muted blue and grey hills or mountains rise above the water. The overall aesthetic is melancholic and dreamlike, with a textured, aged quality to the paint, giving it a timeless or historical feel.
