Prompt

deluge of water puts out flames

More about Fireship

Amazon rain forest is undergoing its worst drought ever recorded. A spark sets dry leaves on fire, & soon swathes of land are ablaze.
Your crew gets the call to go in. This is your Fireship. You are the captain of a fire squad descending into a blaze that has to be put out.
Fireships are starships used for fire fighting. Their payload allocation includes trucks, pumps, hoses, drones, ladders, tools, protective systems & structural restraints. It has 13,000 gallons of water, pumps, portable tanks, & hose networks. 1 Fireship contains resources of an entire fire station response.
Upon touchdown, your crew disperses in formation to cover maximum area. All 12 firetrucks from Fireship form perimeter. Nobody goes outside of perimeter regardless of who needs saving.
Lemur catches crew member’s eye. She breaks the rule, then ends up buried in rubble. She struggles underground to protect lemur.
You are keeping communications active from inside Fireship, ensuring perfect formation before donning your gear & heading out. You hear crackling on the radio.
“Captain, we are down a member. Formation is broken.”
“Keep saving whoever you can. I will find out who it is & where they are.”
Your fireship is inside a smoke column. Before you take action to locate your crew member, power cuts out. Every deck light dies at once, followed half a second later by pumps & ventilation. Fireship remains active by using separate electrical buses, isolated water manifolds, independent pump groups, local batteries, & mechanically closable valves.
Upper pressure doors lock before you reach them. You start feeling around a level you had only briefly seen during onboarding years ago, following the wall with one hand until your fingers hit the cold rails of the ship’s central ladder. It runs almost the entire height of the vehicle. It is the structural spine around which the firefighting decks are arranged.
You climb downward into the bowels of your own ship. Halfway through the dark, something shudders beneath you. Your glove slips. You fall, strike a lower landing, & land across a firehose with a thud hard enough to empty your lungs.
“Captain, is that you? I recognize your scream.”
You know the voice instantly. She is an old reliable crew member, someone you have put out countless fires with in the past. She helps you up to your feet.
You descend farther down damaged ladder. Mechanical locks, electrical conductors, sensor lines, & attachment points function but at lower capacity. This ladder is your access route, elevated monitor, rescue bridge, observation mast, & cargo handler.
At lowest deck you discover where Fireship failed. Fire overheated its underbelly, damaging control wiring. You open cross feed valves then pressurize monitor lines. Intake manifold, pump casing, discharge header, isolation valve, hose reel all power up.
“Alright we are back up. Now Fireship can support our crew. Let us cool down this forest!”
Fireship carries water in multiple reservoirs because 1 enormous tank is a catastrophic failure point. You open a valve for water to move through Fireship. Volutes convert velocity into pressure, then impellers accelerate it outward. Every bend costs energy & every constriction contributes to loss. Water flow goes against friction, gravity, boiling, & distance.
Firefighting takes place with massive water distribution. Ambient temperature decreases as Fireship empties its water reserves through integrated waterways. Water is everywhere as if it is raining.
Crew establishes hose ground lines stemming from fireship & its trucks. Drones lift through smoke then disperse all of the water that they hold before reloading. You are already seeing effects of removing enough heat to halt combustion reactions.
Now that putting out intense Amazon forest fire is underway, you lock in locating your crewmember. 1 drone touches down, then reloads with a thermal camera. It taps in to drone swarm network to isolate thermal signatures different than fire. It locks on to a human & animal signature buried in ash.
You alert closest crewmember who immediately departs on assigned vector. Crewmember uses axe to break apart debris, then pulls lemur & her out from underground.
It takes hours to eradicate all flames. You separate element 8 to remove fuel from fire. Combustion halts entirely. Your mission is successful.
