The white horse (a dapple gray) is completely emaciated, standing with its head lowered in the stormy surf of the North Sea. Its bones are visible in many places, with only a few shreds of skin remaining on its skeleton. The skull is nearly devoid of flesh, revealing the horse's deathly visage. Through the ribs, one can see as if through the ribs of a rotted and weathered wooden boat. It appears as though the white horse has been starved, damned, cursed, and now stands as a monument in the surf. In the background, the tattered skeleton of a sunken ship can be seen, half decayed and listing to the side, sails hanging like rags from partially snapped masts. A picture of decay and transience.
