The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is an Oriental Orthodox Christian church based in Ethiopia. It is one of the largest branches of Oriental Orthodoxy and is the largest in Africa. The church is an Apostolic church tracing its roots to the apostolic activity of the Apostle St. Mark of Alexandria. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is composed of several different monastic orders and is headed by the Patriarch of Ethiopia, currently His Holiness Abune Mathias. The church is known for its strict adherence to traditional beliefs and practices, such as its traditional calendar, four orders of monasticism, strict dietary restrictions, and its active works of charity. Its adherents are estimated to be around 45 million, with the majority located in Ethiopia, but with significant populations in Eritrea, Sudan, and other Diaspora communities.
