More about Isildur unable to destroy the 1 Ring is corrupted by its Power

As Elendil fell, his sword was broken beneath him. Yet Sauron was thrown down, too, and Isildur seized the hilt of his father's sword and cut off the finger on which Sauron wore the One Ring. Being bereft of its power, Sauron was no longer able to hold a physical form and perished.

Alas, the spirit of the Dark Lord was still potent and Isildur was swiftly corrupted by the power of the Ring, refusing to destroy it. The Ring betrayed Isildur to his death, and the will of Sauron was allowed to endure.

For Isildur was marching north along the east banks of the River, and near the Gladden Fields he was waylaid by the Orcs of the Mountains, and almost all his folk were slain. He leaped into the waters, but the Ring slipped from his finger as he swam, and then the Orcs saw him and killed him with arrows.

In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Isildur is shown to have become a Nazgûl after his death at the Gladden Fields, when Sauron places one of the Nine rings on his finger, which resurrects him.
