Autumn in Liora's Valley
The morning smelled of firewood and damp earth.
Leaves detached themselves from the branches like last thoughts
and swirled over the stream,
which was already flowing more slowly,
as if it, too, had bid farewell to summer.
The house at the edge of the forest stood still in its warm robe of shadows and smoke.
Light flickered in the windows,
and the fireplace spoke softly of old evenings.
Pumpkins glowed along the path,
as if to mark the way back to spring.
The lantern at the gate glowed,
although it was still day –
for autumn came in golden veils,
but also with long shadows.
On the bridge, the wind paused briefly,
began one last dance with the leaves,
and then bowed to the silence.
