A masterpiece of abstract, surrealist post-impressionism. Oil on canvas. A large, black African buffalo stands in the savanna grass, gazing melancholically at the viewer. Perched on its back, a yellow-billed oxpecker busily pecks at something on the buffalo’s hide—a natural harmony of coexistence.
The oxpecker—a small bird—feeds on ticks, fleas, and other parasitic insects, ridding a buffalo’s hide of these unwelcome "tenants." These birds also possess excellent eyesight, allowing them to spot approaching predators from a distance and alert the buffalo to danger with loud cries. In return, the buffalo provides the oxpecker with a steady food source and a safe place to rest. This is a perfect example of symbiosis in nature.
