The story is about a young woman named Maria who is overshadowed by her older sister, Sophia. Despite her kind and gentle nature, Maria is considered plain and lacking in grace compared to Sophia. When a prince comes to their village seeking a bride, Sophia sets her sights on him and tries to win his affections, while Maria ignores the commotion and goes about her daily chores. At the prince's ball, Maria is the most beautiful woman there, despite wearing a simple dress, and she and the prince dance the night away. However, Sophia becomes jealous of Maria's success and slips a potion into her drink, causing her to fall into a deep sleep.
