16th-century engraving. The image depicts a natural landscape viewed from a hill. On the left in the distance, you can make out a forest stretching to the horizon. In the center and to the right, there are vast meadows that end on the right in the distance with a town featuring a fortress wall and a towering Gothic church dome. Outside the fortress walls, there are numerous peasant buildings of nearby villages. The main figure in the image is a wanderer, standing with his back to us on the hill on a dirt road leading to the town, which is about 3 miles away. The wanderer holds a staff he leans on. His outer clothing and shoes show signs of a long journey. A bag is slung over his shoulder with the strap crossing his chest. In the sky, there’s an almost total solar eclipse casting a deep shadow effect. Highly detailed with a contemplative depth.
An old black and white etching of a man with a beard and a hat, carrying a staff and a satchel, standing on a hill and looking out over a rural landscape at a city in the distance, with a total solar eclipse visible in the heavily clouded sky above, surrounded by a radiant corona and bright rays of light. In the foreground, there are bushes and grasses on the hill. The middle ground features a valley with fields, scattered trees, a winding path, some cattle grazing, and a few small figures. The background shows a fortified city with walls, towers, and domes, nestled into the landscape.
