More about Count Sándor Móric teasing his horse

Count Sándor Móricz, the “devil rider” (1805–1878): he was a landowner, sportsman and hunter. He was known for his daring horsemanship. In a very short time, he mastered Italian, German and French, learned to play the piano, the zither, and sometimes even composed Styrian songs. Once, he jumped onto a ferry on the Tisza River with his horse named Tatár. On his way to England, he made a bet with the English that he could break a horse that had been completely unmanageable until then, won the bet, and even took part in a horse race with the already broken horse. Seeing this, the horse’s owner simply said: “This is not a man, this is a devil.” However, in his old age, he became mentally ill and spent the rest of his life in the Döbling mental hospital. His name has survived in folk tradition to this day, primarily on the Pest side, as well as in Transdanubia and the Danube–Tisza region.
