In a village tavern, in a rather narrow space, two players facing each other, perfectly symmetrical, are concentrated on the game of cards.
The theme might seem like one of the typical impressionist themes but there is nothing impressionist about this painting.
The characters have massive silhouettes and the silent concentration of the two players is perceived, immersed in a suspended atmosphere. In the background an almost opaque mirror that seems to be part of the boiserie.
The attention is all for the table and for the two players who are represented as two mannequins, because what matters is to isolate the pure volumes, the geometry of which the bodies and objects represented in the painting are made.
