Acrylic painting on the inside of birch bark of a native woman standing near the form of a bear, in the style of traditional Kanien'keha:ka paintings, inspired by works of Stephen Mopope, traditional use of colors and dramatic horizontal brushstrokes
In honor of my mum and her ancestors, this Kanien'keha:ka birch bark acrylic painting depicts a woman in traditional dress, adorned with beads, looking towards a giant bear representing the bear clan (Ohkwá:ri) that walks across water, with a beautiful sunset in the background. The painting has tribal symbols on the top and bottom borders, and the bear's body is infused with swirls and dots.
