In the style of Naoto Hattori, Hugo Simberg and Salvador Dalí, with the sleeper's unease of Henry Fuseli and the deadpan macabre of Charles Addams. Charcoal painting with dramatic chiaroscuro lighting: granular hand-drawn texture, visible strokes and smudges, deep blacks against a few pools of cold light. A vast, still sea of black oil at night. Pale sleeping faces of men rise slowly through it like bubbles, eyes closed, mouths slightly open, each with a thin oxygen tube curled under the nose like a moustache. Along the horizon a single glowing heart-monitor line rises and falls into a range of green mountains. Above hangs a crescent moon that is a polished steel kidney dish. On its rim sits a slender adult night nurse, porcelain-pale and sweetly smiling, in a small white cap, legs dangling, lowering a long silver spoon toward the rising faces. Her shadow on the oil is far too large for her. Palette: charcoal blacks, greys and bone whites, with selective accents of sickly monitor green and a single soft candy pink on the nurse's cheeks. Mood: a lullaby over something hungry; playfully ominous, tender, chilling. Square 1:1 composition: moon and nurse in the upper third, rising faces filling the lower two thirds.
