What does it mean when Jesus descended into hell?
Well, many have understood those words to mean that Jesus Christ, between his death and his resurrection, went locally and physically into hell, into the underworld, in his soul, and that he went for certain purposes. Some say he went to proclaim his victory over the condemned souls in hell.
Why did Jesus go to hell after he died?
An early view of Jesus' descent into this 'underworld' location in one interpretive camp was that he liberated the faithful that had previously experienced death. A later view shares that this place of descent portrays Christ's victory over the Kingdom of Satan, completed in death.
