According to Ovid's Metamorphoses from the 1st century AD, Medusa was originally a beautiful young woman. However, when Athena found Poseidon raping Medusa in one of her temples, she was so enraged that she transformed Medusa into a monster with wings and snakes for hair, her breast armed with coils of a snake. The sight of her turned anyone who saw her to stone.
