The realm of the deep is an intermediate dimension that lies between the reality of the normal world and the dream world. There are some overlaps. The denizens of the Deep were once normal humans who took a substance called miasma which caused them to not only adapt, but to shift to the plane of the Realm of the Deep. Or they are their descendants.
