In Cristian tradition, the flames that appeared on the heads of Jesus' disciples during Pentecost represent the Holy Spirit. The flames were not actual fire, but rather "what seemed to be fire". The flames were divided into small, tongue-shaped flames, which symbolize several things, including:
John the Baptist's prophecy that Jesus would baptize people "with the Holy Spirit and fire" may be being fulfilled
The disciples were given "fiery" eloquence to preach the gospel to all nations
The disciples were granted the ability to speak in a variety of languages
There is one Spirit that gives many gifts
The flames also represent the Holy Spirit filling the apostles with enthusiasm, replacing their fear with the courage to share Christ's story
