ArtistThe logic diagram of an AMD 29000 bit-slice ALU chip.
Hey! Wanna make your own CPU? This is how we did it in the 1970's -- bit slice logic :) Just like the old PDP11 minis :) Actually, we used Texas Instruments 74LS181's, but very much the same idea :) This is how CPU's were built before Intel came along with the 8008 and 8080 chips. Get a bunch of ALU (arithmetic-logic units) and registers (flip-flop banks), connect their outputs to a "bus" via tri-state buffers (gates which enable one of multiple outputs to be selected), and oo ee bob's your uncle. Or so he says, but anyway Sheila's your auntie, as far as the neighbours are concerned anyway :)
