The Ratcatcher in Hamel According to legend, in 1284, a man in a cloak arrived in the rat-infested Saxon town of Hameln, who promised to rid the town of rats for money. Although he lured the animals into a nearby river with his magical whistle, he was refused the negotiated wage. The stranger therefore later returned in the guise of a hunter, and this time with his magical whistle he lured 130 children with him, who never returned. Historians had previously suspected that the legend might have a real basis, but evidence was lacking. Czech researchers managed to find them. "Research and archival sources prove that the 130 children mentioned in the chronicle were taken by the piper to the vicinity of Vyskov in South Moravia"
